The way I see it, there are three levels of self-awareness. On the other hand, I have a lot of things off my mind. I’m always aware of my own tendencies, habits, and activities. There are those who take me literally on a ride in the park for a few minutes, all the time, and then they’re really off-limits to me, which I’m not allowed to do.
The “self-awareness” is the ability, or lack of, to think about what’s going on in the world. It’s about the way we think about ourselves. As an example, I was introduced to a new-to-me-friend-in-the-back seat that I had never even seen before, with my dad talking about his mom being an idiot, and her brother playing the game of “Hair” and “Lassie” and “Dope.
There is a lot of self-awareness in our everyday lives (and in the world in general), but a lot of it is invisible and not always obvious. With this in mind, we should be aware of what our own thoughts and behaviors are doing. We can learn a lot about ourselves by asking ourselves, “What am I thinking?”, “How am I feeling?”, and “How am I acting?”.
There is a big difference between what we think and what we do. I know that this doesn’t make sense, but our thoughts go unseen and unacknowledged because they’re not connected to our actions. Even if we feel the need to think, if we’re not aware of the thoughts we’re thinking or the feeling we’re feeling, we can’t control them.
Most of us can learn to control our thoughts and feelings, so to say, we cannot control our own thoughts and feelings is not exactly true. We can only control our actions and the way we are acting. We can learn to let go of self-doubt, and to let go of our personal beliefs (our biases).
So to sum up, when we are not aware of our actions, we cannot control our actions. When we are aware of our actions, we can control our actions. So for most of us, when we do something, we are not aware of the action, its happening, and what we have done to make it happen. That is, we are not aware of ourselves doing the action or the outcome of the action we are aware of.
When we are aware of our actions we are acting. When we are not aware of our actions we are not acting. We are aware of ourselves acting and not aware of ourselves being aware of ourselves being acting. We can change our actions, or our actions can change us.
So we can think we are doing something when it is actually something else. We are doing something, but we are not aware of what that is. So we don’t really know what causes our behavior. For example, if I open my laptop and it says “you have reached the 10th level of a game” while playing a game, I can tell that I am playing the game.
